It’s great to be back with another installment of Breaking It Down. This time I wanted to explore the source of overwhelm with you. I find, as a business coach, that I hear the word overwhelm a lot in my client sessions. It certainly feels like an epidemic at times. The thing is (my therapist hat is on here), people get caught up in the overwhelm so much that they struggle to be able to take the blinkers off and see what’s really going on underneath it all.
So how do you do that?
First things first. It is imperative for you to stop whatever you are in the middle of and take some time to reflect on what’s causing you the stress that’s leading to the overwhelm.
Next ask yourself the following questions to try and gain some understanding
1. How would I describe how I’m feeling?
2. What do I think, if I’m completely honest, is underneath these feelings?
3. How do I want to feel instead?
4. What could I do to address this issue / challenge / problem?
5. What will I do to address this issue / challenge / problem?
6. When will I take action to get a different result?
If needed you can reflect on what’s happening and ask the questions as many times as you need to. I’m a big believer in trusting your intuition and in allowing the space you need to find out what’s going on so you can make shifts and changes to create different, and hopefully better, outcomes.
While it might feel counter intuitive to take some time out to do this when you feel like pulling your hair out I encourage you to give it a go. Really, what have you got to lose?
